“Traffic, too bad, nakaka-bad trip. Ba’t ‘di muna mag-SMB? After work, mag five thirsty…” goes the jingle of San Miguel Beer commercial more than a decade ago. San Miguel Beer is a product of San Miguel Brewery, subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation. The TV commercials of San Miguel Beer had been related to fellowship over bottles of beer after a day’s work or on weekends. Some showed the realities in a Filipino’s daily life such as the long time and getting worse traffic in Metro Manila.

On two ocassions, I was able to hop on my favorite yellow Metrolink bus with route from Malanday to NAIA and vice versa without noticing it has a big slogan outside saying: “Make someone’s day today. #SMCbetterworld.” Passengers would call the bus attendant’s attention to hand him their fare because it was taking him long to collect. But the bus attendant would instead hand the Libreng Sakay ticket.

From Philstar.com, I learned that Libreng Sakay is an initiative of San Miguel Corporation, on their 125th anniversary, to share something good in the communities thay they serve. Eight buses of the yellow Metrolink buses with the slogan: “Make someone’s day today” offer free bus ride from Malanday to NAIA starting 5:30 a.m., and from NAIA to Malanday starting 4:30 p.m. This started on September 21, 2015. Employee volunteers who are part of their Team Malasakit (Care Group) help in this project.

Other perks in a Libreng Sakay bus:

  • free wifi
  • free breakfast/merienda (limited)
  • celebrities on board on selected days

Even just the free ride is enough to bring smiles to the commuters.

Thank you San Miguel Corporation! Happy 125th Anniversary! More power to you!
